What a year 2017 was! It was a year filled with lots of travel and photography. From head shots to equestrian portraits to family sessions, below is a selection of some of my portrait and animal photography from the year.
The year began with a trip home from Alberta where I’d been photographing a friend’s NYE wedding. Then it was off to Saltspring Island for a weekend with some of my best girlfriends from high school. We hiked, we cooked, we brunched and my car broke down (not on the ferry thankfully although it was close!) but all in all it was great to get away for a mini vacation.
In April, my mum and I were off to explore New York city and Washington D.C. — a few of the photos from this trip are at the end of this blog post. Of course I found horses almost instantly in both cities but that’s what happens when you travel with me apparently! One of the highlights of the trip was seeing the musical on Broadway, Come from Away. If you ever have the chance to see this musical do it!! It’s set in Gander, Newfoundland the week of September 11, 2001 as 38 planes landed in Gander and the small town suddenly had to accommodate close to 7,000 stranded passengers. It had us laughing and crying and the New Yorker sitting next to us told us it was the best musical he’d ever seen and he was a frequent Broadway goer.
At the beginning of summer, my horse Zappa injured himself and needed several months off, with his prescribed treatment being hand walking, icing and wrapping his legs twice a day. I thought I spent a lot of time at the barn before, but this injury meant I was out there twice a day every day! The summer went by in a blur of weddings and photo sessions and running back and forth to the barn for three months. Thankfully, after the three months off, he was given the all-clear to return to work in a strict rehab exercise program for another three months. He was a very good patient in the grand scheme of things, and now that he’s back to normal work I’m excited to see what this year will have in store for us.
In August I jetted off to Calgary for my annual photo trip to New View Stables. This time there was a new member of the family to meet, Ashleigh and Cory’s baby Jaxson. It was so much fun to spend some time zooming him around the farm in his stroller, which seemed to put him to sleep every time! Thank you to everyone at New View Stables who always welcome me so graciously every time I visit–I love my trips to Calgary and I’m sure I’ll be back in 2018.
To all my incredible clients–thank you for supporting my work, believing in photography and allowing me to capture your most important memories and cherished family members.
The final photo is from a shoot we did with Sarah Stein of Fragment of Light this past May. It was great to get in front of the camera again and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the photos.
Cheers to a happy and healthy 2018!
